THE GAMELAN DIGUL of INDONESIA CALLING

Anthony Liem wrote a text about the history of the Gamelan Digul, the first gamelan in Australia, which is an important historical object illustrating the fight for Indonesian independance against Dutch colonial rule. This gamelan is at display at the Monash University, Performing Arts Centre in Melbourne in the Margaret Kartomi Gallery.

Andries Deinum and a find of The Camera and I

After some 80 years after it was written by Ivens, a bound typoscript of his first autobiography The Camera and I, was found in Portland, Oregon, USA. Ella Thomas, who is for 32 years Director of Education for the Northwest Film Center, the Northwest region's largest and most comprehensive film arts organization, writes how she found it:

Oscar Winning '20 Days in Mariupol' (2023) and Ivens's '40 Days in Madrid' (1937)

When watching Mstyslav Chernov’s Oscar-winning film 20 Days in Mariupol, Alex Vernon, professor in English and specialist in 20th century war-literature, could not but see parallels with The Spanish Earth. This documentary by Joris Ivens, John Fernhout and Ernest Hemingway was the result of 40 days of film shooting in besieged Madrid in 1937. Both films draws on personal footage with an harrowing account of civilians caught in the siege, in 1936 a new kind of warfare.

European Film Academy honors Ivens and Liftbridge as Treasure of European Film Culture

The European Film Academy (EFA) honors Joris Ivens, The Bridge (1928) and the vertical-lift bridge in Rotterdam (Koningshaven Bridge) by including it as Treasures of European Film Culture. It is for the first time that a Dutch filmmaker and location is included in this growing list of in the meanwhile 49 European locations in 24 countries, which or of extreme importance for the European film culture. The Second Stage production of Spain in the Tony Kiser Theater in New York presented in December '23 a play about The Spanish Earth with Joris Ivens, Helen van Dongen, Ernest Hemingway and John Dos Passos as the protagonists. A performance of Rain at a Climate Change programme

During a concert at the 'Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy' University of Music and Theater in Leipzig the subject of Climate Change was íllustrated' by Ivens' film Rain/Regen (1929) accompanying Hanns Eisler’s "14 Arten den Regen zu beschreiben" (*Fourteen Ways to Describe Rain). A Gift of Ivens films

Recently the Ivens Foundation received six reels of a working copy of The 17th Parallel (1968). Laurence Lefèvre gave these reels to André Stufkens in her place in Montreuil. She got this working copy from her sister, the late Liliane Korb, who passed away in 2022. At the age of 26 Liliane Korb edited this long documentary about the peoples war and fight for independence of the Vietnamese people against the US occupation. How an Ivens film helps to reconstruct cultural heritage in Valparaiso

In 1963 Joris Ivens made, together with students from the university in Santiago de Chile, a poetic film mosaic of the Chilean harbour city Valparaiso, called …à Valparaiso. Ivens Meets China

After years of preparations and research, professor Zhang Tongdao (University of Beijing) and Dutch filmmaker René Seegers finalized their four-part television series about Joris Ivens. Picasso Shared and Divided: The Artist and His Image in East and West Germany

Project of a Book on the History of FIAF

The Bundesarchiv-Berlin Germans National Film Archive donated 239 Ivens films to the European Foundation Joris Ivens in Nijmegen. The film prints are mainly nitrate and date from the thirties through fifties. Among the titles are classics as Rain (1929), Philips Radio (1931), New Ground (1933), Borinage (1934) and Indonesia Calling (1946). The Foundation will use these films to investigate unique versions and images that are not yet in the present collection.

This year, the Seville European Film Festival is turning a special spotlight on films made in Holland with one of the largest selections from this country ever shown in a festival. Special attention goes out to Joris Ivens with a retrospective of six films. Marceline Loridan-Ivens is present at the festival and will give a master class as part of the Festival-Campus programme. The Seville European Film Festival 2010 will take place from 5 to 13 November.

Poster Ivens retrospective 1983, Lisbon

Since April 1983, it is the first time that Portugal shows again a large Ivens retrospective of about 40 films. The 8th DOCLISBOA International Documentary Filmfestival is screening from 14 - 24 October every day in a chronological order a kind of time travel along the 20th century with Ivens` film oeuvre.

Man Ray, L’Étoile de mer, based on a poem by Robert Desnos

Cinepoem is a new trend in filmmaking but the history of the cinepoem goes back to the early days of cinema. The film avant-garde in the 20’s with artists like Man Ray, Paul Strand, Fernand Léger and Joris Ivens created cinepoems in an attempt to elevate film to an art form.

Music Huub de Vriend for the movie `Rain` by Ivens

In the music theater at the Waterlooplein in Amsterdam, the crème de la crème of the international history scientists were treated to an ensemble dressed in yellow boots and typical Dutch rain head. During the 21th edition of the International Congress of Historical Sciences they played music composed by Huub de Vriend for the movie `Rain` by Joris Ivens (1929), which was shown simultaneously on a large screen.

The educational project ‘eyeandthecity’ wants to inspire students at school to study ‘city photography’ from the 19th Century up to today and create city photos themselves. The first school to work with our creative and educational website eyeandthecity was the ‘Kandinsky College’ in Nijmegen. Entrance of the Dutch Cultural Center in Shanghai, part of the Dutch contribution to the World Expo.

During the weekend of 9 and 10 July at the World Expo in Shanhai, Joris Ivens will be honored in a true `Joris Ivens weekend`. On Friday evening and Saturday afternoon and evening 13 films by Joris Ivens are screened. The films are grouped around six themes: Introduction / Stories in China / Against Facism / Avant-garde / China / Poetry and Cinema. Mrs Loridan-Ivens and the European Foundation Joris Ivens will be present to introduce the films. The theatre space at the Dutch Culture Centre will also host a small exhibition of photographs of Joris Ivens and Mrs Marceline Loridan-Ivens.
