‘The last good war’,  Ernest Hemingway called the Spanish Civil War, which affected Spain from 1936 to 1939. The artists taking sides by supporting the Republican government and by fighting on the battle field, continue to be a source of inspiration. Recently the American novelist Amanda Vaill published her book 'Hotel Florida. Truth, Love and Death in The Spanish Civil War'.  Joris Ivens is one of the protagonists in Vaill’s book thanks to The Spanish Earth for which he collaborated with the three loving couples who are at the centre of the storyline : Ernest Hemingway & Martha Gellhorn, Robert Capa & Gerda Taro and Arturo Barea & Ilsa Kulscar.

You are now visiting the new website about filmmaker Joris Ivens (Nijmegen 1898- Parijs 1989). Since 1997 the European Foundation Joris Ivens is managing the archival collections, based in Ivens' birthplace Nijmegen. This collection, profesionally preserved in the vaults of the Regional Archive Nijmegen, has been extended thanks to acquisition and is now twice as large as when we started. Even nowadays we receive new documents and collections, for instance in March this year boxes of the Hans Wegner Collection given by the Bundesarchiv were given to the Ivens Fiundation as well as interviews about Joris Ivens, Helen van Dongen and Martha Gellhorn from Canada.
In previous years some 100.000 documenten of the 12 collections, 11.000 photo's, 5.000 clippings, 350 posters and 25 films have been listed and digitised. These data become applicable on this website.

Volunteers worked for years on the inventory lists: Anne Japsers (clippings, Marion Michelle), Britt van bebber (library), Merel Geelen (Jan de Vaal), Alice Hautvast (data), Wilma Roland (library) and others. Walter van Rooij created the design of the website and Bjorn Thannhauser the databse (Movements Group).

The film Far from Vietnam / Loin de Vietnam (1967) made by renowned directors Alain Resnais, Jean-Luc Godard, Chris Marker, Agnes Varda, Claude Lelouch, William Klein and Joris Ivens, was until recently hardly available, and only in bootlegged versions. But since a short while two DVD boxes, published by Icarus/First Run in the USA and by ARTE in France, present this crucial film in protest of American military involvement in Vietnam in restored version. The film is the more interesting because of its genesis. The mosaic of various film styles made by various directors in a truly collaborative effort evolved from a similar approach Ivens intended to use for Pour le Mistral (1966).
