The Bundesarchiv-Berlin Germans National Film Archive donated 239 Ivens films to the European Foundation Joris Ivens in Nijmegen. The film prints are mainly nitrate and date from the thirties through fifties. Among the titles are classics as Rain (1929), Philips Radio (1931), New Ground (1933), Borinage (1934) and Indonesia Calling (1946). The Foundation will use these films to investigate unique versions and images that are not yet in the present collection.

Nitrate Films are highly flammable. Because in Nijmegen there is no special storage for Nitrate these films will be stored in sepecial vaults in Amsterdam owned by  the EYE Netherlands Film Institute (the former Dutch Film Museum). The total Ivens collection contains over 700 movie prints, which were examined by the Ivens Foundation in previous years. Andre Stufkens, director of the European Foundation Joris Ivens: "We are pleased with this acquisition. It is a sign of trust and appreciation that the Bundesarchiv will hand these films to us. In previous years we started to reconstruct the most authentic versions of Ivens films. These were release of the DVD box and it proved that we achieve remarkable results with it.This DVD-Box received the ‘Il Cinema Ritrovato Best DVD Award 2009’ for Best DVD box worldwide for restored films. Meanwhile the Dutch edition of this DVD box is sold out. In France, Germany and China versions were  released last year by the foundation. A version for the United States and Canada will be released this year. We  consider it of great importants that the entire movie collection from Joris Ivens films will be inventoried. Wit this newly gained collection we will get closer to that ideal."

The transfer of Ivens films is part of the divestment policy of national film archives. Archives nowadays have such an enormous and rapidly growing number of films that they choose to focus on homegrown films. Foreign-made films will therefore return to the most appropriate partner in the country of origin. The European Foundation Joris Ivens is a member of FIAF, the International Federation of Film Archives.
