Every year during the documentary festival Cinema du Reél the Joris Ivens prize is awarded in the category `Best First Film’. The award is ment for a beginning filmmaker with an exceptional first filmThis year the Italian filmmaker Andrea Deaglio won the prize for his film City Veins.

 

The film `City Veins´ is situated in the North West of Italy, in Turin, in an areawhere two rivers converge, located 5 km from the center of Turin.For over a century this industrial  backyard is deserted andsmeared with oil and toxic waist. The remnants of industry are covered with vegetation. In this forgotten land near the water, nature follows it’s own course.

This place is not as deserted as it seems it’s inhabited by Roma, unemployed Italiansand drug addicts. Men move through the vegetation between land and water. Gerardo Angelo and the other farmers to claim the land they have occupied and cultivated for years now. Roky,Darius and Jasmina live in an settlement on the banks of the river with more than 500 other people. Frida goes in search ofheroin in a large open-air drug market. The biggest in Italy. Addicts walk aroundnervously looking for dealers.
