Photo Historian Rixt Bosma has done an extensive research on an essay about the 7 month journey of Robert Capa in 1938, in China, at a time when the country was ravaged by a Japanese invasion. Capa worked and traveled with the Dutch filmmaker Joris Ivens and his cameraman John Fernhout. He also sought to make an independent photo essay on the Sino-Japanese war for the international journals. Strict censorship, restricted freedom of movement, logistical problems and sandstorms were a number of factors that made it a difficult undertaking.Even so Capa managed to publish a significant number of photo essays in international journals such as Life, Paris Match, the Dutch Catholic Illustration. The experience of the then 24-year old photographer in China sow the seeds for the establishment of the agency Magnum Photos in 1947. He spoke in letters to his familly and relations about his wish to cooperate with like-minded photojournalists and to have more control and power over the use of his work.

In the Joris Ivens Archives are most of the  pictures by Robert Capa that he made during this trip. These approximately 80 pictures were first examined and compared with Capa-pictures of this journey in other archives, such as the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, ICP (International Center of Photography) in New York, and Leiden University.
